Imphal is the capital of the Indian state of Manipur. Located in a valley surrounded by hills from which several small rivers flow. In the center of the city are the ruins of the old fort Kangla, which until 2003 were occupied by armed units of the Indian army. Imphal is the world's oldest polo field. As of 2001, the city’s population was 217275 people, 50% of men and 50% of women. The literacy rate is 79%.
