Tawang is a remote area in western Arunachal Pradesh and the most visited in the state. Tawang is famous primarily for the ancient Buddhist monastery of the Gelukpa School, founded about 400 years ago. Tawang Monastery stands on the edge of a rock towering over a wide valley, above pastures where yaks graze.
