Kolhapur, located on the banks of the Panchaganga River, 225 km south of Pune, supposedly from ancient times is an important center of tantric worship associated with the worship of Shakti. The city may have grown around a sacred place where the Mahalakshmi temple is currently located, which still plays an important role in the life of the city, although, as they say, there are up to 250 other temples in the area.
