Trivandrum (which once bore the proud name of Thiruvananthapuram) is the capital of the South Indian state of Kerala. It is worthwhile to come here only in order to find out the correct translation of Thiruvananthapuram, which from the Sanskrit Thiru-anantha-puram means "The holy city of the serpent Ananta, on which Vishnu has the habit of reclining, swaying on the waves of the world’s ocean in complete and absolute idleness."
